Big Catch operates on a tile-swapping match-3 engine where your objective is to align three or more identical fishing items in vertical or horizontal rows. The grid presents you with hooks, bobbers, corn bait, shrimp, and detailed fish illustrations—each occupying a single tile on a six-column board extending up to eleven rows deep.
Every level assigns you a specific score target and a limited move count. Swap any two adjacent tiles to form combinations; successful matches clear those tiles from the board and award points based on the matched item type. Larger combos trigger cascading matches that multiply your score while consuming only a single move from your pool.
The progression system unlocks levels sequentially—completing level 6 with at least one star grants access to level 7, and so forth. Star ratings reflect performance: hit the minimum score for one star, exceed the baseline significantly for two, or reach exceptional totals for three stars. Secondary objectives appear as fraction counters at the bottom of the gameplay screen, tracking items like collecting a specific number of fish or clearing bobbers within the move limit.
Each level sets a target score displayed on a progress bar. Match items strategically to maximize points per move, with cascading combos multiplying your total toward the goal threshold.
Levels enforce a strict move cap shown in the top-right counter. Plan your swaps carefully—every tile exchange consumes one move, whether it results in a match or not.
Performance determines your star count. Scrape by for one star, exceed expectations for two, or dominate with flawless combos to earn all three. Stars unlock during the completion screen alongside your final score.
The board populates with five distinct item types: curved hooks, striped bobbers, golden corn kernels, pink shrimp, and detailed fish illustrations. Each item features unique artwork for instant visual recognition.
The level selection screen displays a 4-column grid with numbered tiles. Completed levels show cream backgrounds with star counts; locked levels appear dark blue with padlock icons until prerequisites are met.
Stuck mid-puzzle? Tap the circular question mark on the right edge to highlight a viable match. Use hints sparingly to conserve them for tougher levels where move efficiency is critical.
